Conversations in Character

At Vacation Bible School this week at my church, I'm acting in the skit within the first 20 minutes of the night. After that, I wander around getting footage of the kids (with help from Jonathan) for a video I'll make for the next day.

Kids are starting to recognize me from the stage. As much as possible, I'm trying to talk to them as if I'm still my character instead of someone taking their picture. I become Pearl Shellfish (real name: Sugar Cooky) again, the girl who yesterday stole the treasure map from the Captain and first mate and is now trying to solve the clues to find the long lost treasure!

When I went to visit the kindergarteners at snack time, Pearl and the kids had a few cute conversations about the skit:

Kindergartener 1: Hey I recognize you from the thing in the gym!
K 2: You're a thief!
Pearl: I'm not a thief! I haven't stolen anything!.... yet.
K 2: Uh huh, you stole the map!
Pearl: Krumbs LOST it and I found it and... didn't give it back yet!
K 2: That's stealing! We're not supposed to steal.

K 3: I saw you on stage!
Pearl: You did? Well, I saw you in the audience! Did you enjoy it?
K 3: *nods*
Pearl: Great, I'm glad! Am I going to see you again tomorrow?
K 3: Yep, I wanna come again!
Pearl: Oh that's good! Because tomorrow I'm gonna work super hard and try to find the treasure, and I want you to be there!

K 4: *whispers* Hi Sugar Cooky!
Pearl: Shhh, that's not my name! That's our secret! Right?
K 4: Sugar Cooky.... Pearl!

I've never been good at improvisation, but I'm quite enjoying little conversations like these :)

Shrek Quotes from Rehearsals

Originally, I had planned to end this blog in June, when I graduated. However, a) I forgot to write a "goodbye" blog post and b) I haven't even started college yet, so who says my senior year is over? I started the blog in August '13 anyway... and there are still some things I want to tell you about!

One thing, and I'll focus on that now, is the show I'm in! Shrek the Musical with Journey Summer Theater!

Today we had costume parade, where we tried on most of our costumes, adjusted them, and got them approved by the director. While waiting around for my turn, I happened to hear a few things that, out of context (or even in context...), are quite strange!

Hopefully after enjoying these hilarious lines, you'll be excited to come see these crazy people on stage! They really put on a good show!

Lord Farquaad (older man): Daddy?!
His father (young boy): I need a beard son, hold on.

 Costume parade... fake facial hair... what can I say? ;)

Guard 1: What do you have for swords today?
Guard 2: I have a light sabor!!
Captain: I have a... mic stand!

That moment when you really need a stand in prop...

Joel: Do I have a head today?

No, did you have one yesterday? In this show, Joel plays a character, Walter the Greeter, who has a huge fake head. I'll leave the rest of that scene a surprise ;)

Pig: Hug me! I'm squishy!

Pillows as fat suits make for a comfortable time in the greenroom!

And now for my personal favorite of the day.....

"Lord Farquaad has decreed that men shall not wear pants!"

 I think I DIED when I heard this one!!! Oh gosh... still laughing...

~~

Enjoy that? I thought you might ;) get your tickets for Shrek the Musical (August 8-17) at www.journeytheater.org to see these crazy awesome people doing what they do best!\

I Graduated

Really?

Whoa.

I graduated?

See, there's still a little bit of me that thinks nothing's changed, even though so much has. That little bit still thinks I'll be doing school at home next year, still thinks I'll be filling my free time with editing videos for fun and writing stories, still thinks I'll be doing shows at Journey.

I used to often think "What'll it be like to graduate?"

Well... at the moment, it's not that different. True, I'm taking the placement test for PCC tomorrow (!!), but I can't sign up for anything till August and classes don't start till late September. I suppose that's when things will really getting exciting. For now, life's pretty much the same as it was last week.

But since my grad party on Sunday, I think the majority of me finally realizes that I'll be going to college in the fall, doing homework and editing videos to actually be graded, and who knows what at Journey... I'd love to TA but that's not for me to decide.

So if you came to the party... thanks. You helped me accept my future just a little bit more ;) and we had a great time!

So It's Been a While...

Shut up... :)

So maybe I haven't posted in... more than a month. I've been busy, ok?! Life just picked up and I didn't have time to write a blog post... and every time I thought about it I could never come up a topic to write about.

Actually... I still can't.

Well I mean, stuff has happened! Lots of stuff! But I don't necessarily want to write about it allllll.... how about I just give you a quick over view and just the stuff that'll interest you?

[side note.... a chicken is yelling at me from outside of my window.... wow.]

Best. Singing. Photo. Ever.
Cinderella

Cinderella may have been the best show I have ever done! Not only was it the biggest cast wise, but it had an insane amount of harmonies and dancing, two things that I love. For the leads, it was packed full of emotion. Let's just say that every time we ran the trial scene, someone was in tears. Once we moved into the theater, the sets and costumes and everything made the whole production 100% times better, and it was already great!

A lot of you already know this... but Cinderella was my last show with Journey Theater Arts Group (JTAG) before I aged out as a student. Because of that... I tried to forget that depressing little fact and be as happy as I could the entire term! Sure, it had it's ups and down, but this was one of the best terms at Journey for me ever. I made some new friends and strengthened lots of old friendships, I sang and danced a lot and got to act like a fool on stage (which I thoroughly enjoyed), show week was a blast, and we had sold out shows all weekend!

Even closing day was better than I could have hoped for... sure, I started to lose it in the
blackout before bows. Sure, I really did lose it after the curtain closed for the last time. But my friends were there supporting me and we hugged it out before heading to meet and greet. The rest of the day was a blaaaast! During meet and greet we all posed for probably ten billion pictures, then it was off to strike party! We celebrated, we ate, we danced, we sang... and I was honored with the Rose Award at the end :)

School

Of course, with the end of Journey also comes the end of school... and sure, maybe those should be listed in the opposite order, but whatever! Tomorrow, June 13, I graduated from Lindley Academy. Or homeschool, which ever you prefer. We're not doing anything extremely special to celebrate... in fact, my mom's going to a book sale and I might have callbacks. But still, we picked tomorrow as the date! Which means... I got to design my diploma this week!

No, you didn't misread that. I made my diploma. We didn't order it from some random place.

I pulled out my mom's old high school diploma and designed mine based around the layout of that. I changed the names, switched up the wording, ironically kept the same date... and I gotta say it looks pretty good! Watch Facebook tomorrow for a picture of me, my personally designed diploma, and a graduation hat with a very special tassel! :)

Are you going to college this fall? Yes, of course! Where are you going? PCC, thank you for asking! No, it's not just general ed. Yes, they actually have degrees there! Surprising right?

Ok, enough sass... Yes I'm going to PCC in the fall to start in on a 2 year degree in Visual Communications. Video stuff.... that's my official description of it. Some of my classes will be at the Rock Creek campus but most of them are out at the Cascade campus.

Yeah... the campus near NE Portland... with all the shooting. It'll be grand!

Life

Let's see, what else has happened in my life that I want to tell you about... I finished watching Doctor Who! Well really I still have the Day of the Doctor left and I want to watch the Time of the Doctor again, but still, I'm right there!! :D

I got called to be an extra on an episode of that new show filming in Portland; the Librarians! It was a six day shoot and I said I was available but they haven't gotten back to me yet... and we're supposed to film tomorrow. It probably won't happen, but it was still exciting to be called.

Shrek auditions are tonight... I'm kinda nervous; afraid I haven't prepared enough. But there's nothing else I can do, so what happens will happen! This show is with Journey Summer Theater (JST). It's the summer version of Journey where adults can audition and perform too! This term a lot of people from Journey Beaverton are auditioning... including a few parents! The last set of auditions are tonight, tomorrow are general dance callbacks, and then Saturday they do reads and singing for the leads.

I most likely won't get a Saturday callback, whish is good because I'm going to Oaks Park :) ^_^

~~

So anyway, you're probably tired of reading about my life now. Just know that it's going GREAT and I'm so excited for this summer!! :)

The Beast is a Time Lord

I love Disney and I love Doctor Who, so when the two things somehow meet... it makes me happy :)

Recently I discovered a collection of pictures that featured Disney princesses with the TARDIS and Doctor showing up to take them on an adventure. One that stood out to me was this one....

It gives me another fact to help prove that the Beast is really the Doctor and Beauty and the Beast is the story of his regeneration!

And now, if you care (or dare) to read ahead, I will state my case! :)

1. The Beast never seems to age.

"...The rose she offered was truly an enchanted rose, which would bloom until his 21st year..."

"Ten years we've been rusting..."

All the servants we're changed into household objects at the same time the Beast became... the beast. So if Lumiere says they've been rusting for ten years, and this is the year the Beast's rose dies, meaning he's turning 21, then... he was 11 when he was cursed?

But that doesn't make sense because...

2. There's a current portrait of the Beast in the West Wing.

He sure doesn't look eleven years old there too me!

This is easily explained however if the Beast is a Time Lord. First of all, assume that he did not look like this before he was cursed. When the lady changed him into a beast, she changed his very DNA to become the monster. She also extracted all the memories of this "Time Lordiness" and replaced it with memories of the life of a prince.

This is exactly what the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) did to himself once. He became totally human and put everything Time Lord about himself into a watch for safe keeping. Well, instead of a watch, the sorceress changed it up so someone had to fall in love with him. We can't follow the Doctor Who plot to closely now...

Wait! I hear you saying. But if he didn't look like that before the curse, then why does he have a picture?

Time travel.

No seriously! After the beast regenerated in to Prince Adam at the end of the movie, he realized that the portrait he'd been looking at the whole time was of his new face. Thus, he had to deliver the portrait to himself so he could get all mad at it and rip it to shreds. So he had someone paint his face, hopped in the TARDIS, and mailed the portrait to himself ten years ago.

Yeah? Ok, moving on!

3. The castle

Recently -- well a few weeks ago -- I helped host a movie night at my theater group where we watched Beauty and the Beast.

When Belle walked into the castle for the first time, my friend made a comment. "Why are Disney castles always bigger on the inside?"

That's completely true too... they are. And that made me think... guess what else is bigger on the inside? The TARDIS!!

Here's what happened: A while before the Doctor was cursed, he fixed the disguising thing inside the TARDIS so she would really blend in wherever they landed. So instead of a police box, the TARDIS now looks like a castle. That also explains why it totally changes looks at the end of the movie when the Beast regenerates: It's changing it' disguise to match the situation and appear normal. Beast = creepy castle. Prince = amazing castle.

4. The Beast regenerates.

Moment on the right... Broke. My. Heart.
While some people call this his transformation, it really is exactly like when the Doctor regenerates. Golden light bursts out from his hands, head, and feet and his looks change.

The Doctor only regenerates when he's hurt so bad, if he was a human, he would die. The Beast just got stabbed in the side (there was dripping blood! In a Disney movie!) so obviously he's hurting pretty bad.

5. He has strange companions

The Doctor has had some strange and down right crazy companions in the past....but has yet to be accompanied by dancing ale mugs and forks!

It does look like he has a fondness for dogs though:

While this isn't a definite reason the Beast is the Doctor (many Disney characters have strange friends) it still helps.

6. Belle's book is a story about a Time Lord.

I want you to take a look at this meme....

Got that? Good. Now, go back and notice that the book is blue.

Belle's book is River Song's journal.

 ~~

Well there you have it! Six reasons the Beast is a Time Lord and Beauty and the Beast is just the story of one of his many, many adventures in all of space and time!

Mind blown? You're welcome :)

The Royal Family Tree

So I was out having lunch with Emma and Kaitlyn today and we got to talking about our show Cinderella, as we always do. Specifically we were talking about the king and queen of the show. No particular reason... they just came up.

At some point I randomly pointed out how the Queen (played by Ruth) being the mother of Prince Andrew (played by Joel) is weird because a few shows ago Joel played Ruth's father...

That started us thinking of the actors' relationships with everyone else based on parts they've played in past shows. We managed to come up with an entire family tree for the Royal Family in Cinderella!

The Royal Family Tree (less complicated version)

Ok, let me explain....

In Cinderella, Ryan is the King, Ruth is the Queen, and Joel is Prince Andrew. Joel will end up marrying Lorna, aka Cinderella.

Now, in Tom Sawyer, Meagan played Mrs. Peters and Ryan played Lyle Peters, her son. Thus making Meagan the king's mother, thus making her a grandmother to Joel and "grandmother-in-law" to Lorna.

Also in Tom Sawyer, Lorna played Mrs. Rogers and Annika played Ben Rogers, her son. Thus Annika is now Cinderella and Prince Andrew's (future) daughter.

Adding Annika in the mix makes Ryan and Ruth grandparents and Meagan a great-grandmother!... with no husband...

That's the less complicated version. If you want to get really deep...

1) Meagan was Lorna's mother in Anne of Green Gables. (Mrs. Barry and Diana Barry respectively)
2) Joel has played Ruth's father twice. They were Father Frog and Young Frog in Frog and Toad, and Matthew and Anne in Anne of Green Gables.
3) Joel unofficially was Lorna's brother in Tom Sawyer during the barn dance. We called him "Crazy Uncle Rogers."

But if you considered those things, then we'd have to get into a whole bunch of wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff full of paradoxes and multiple identities.

Let's keep it simple and stick with a husbandless great-grandmother, ruling grandparents, a marriage that will happen at the end of the show, and a future child.

You're welcome!

Getting into Character

This past weekend was the first rehearsal for our next show, Cinderella. In Saturday's rehearsal, we were put into family groups; a mother and a few kids per family.

Yeah, I realize I didn't list a father. It's complicated... they needed the guys on cast for something else.

Anyway, our director, Lindsey, told us to develop our characters a bit in our downtime. Not just make up a name, but answer some questions: Why are you visiting the village? Where do you live? Where is your husband since he's not on stage with you?

She told us to dig deep into our characters. I'm not sure how deep she expected us to go, but a few of us went really far...

Here I'll be introducing you to three characters in the show - Lydia, Alexandra, and Elizabeth. They're hardly named on stage, but you'll see that these characters have lives almost as complex as Cinderella's, and they're just as important to our story.

Lydia - created and played by Emma Lindley

    Lydia Aranea Contesa (formerly Lydia Clover), age 34, is a strong soul. Having been born into a poor family, she grew up working hard to get food on the table. Cooking quickly became her life. So much so that after her husband John was murdered, leaving her to raise her daughters Alexandra and Samantha alone, she started working as a merchant chef at
the palace. She works hard to maintain a comfortable living so her children can have the best chances at life. She doesn't have patience with lazy people - unless they're royalty, of course! She believes Prince Andrew would be a perfect match for one of her daughters, so she trains Alexandra in manners and etiquette so she could be a potential suitor. Serving the royal family is one of her biggest delights, and to be a part of the royal family (by Alexandra marrying the prince) would be the best life for her children that she could possibly offer. Her children are her life and she will stop at nothing to make sure they reach their full potential.
    Lydia grew up poor so she knows how to keep a well-organized house. She is five foot four and her caramel brown hair and light freckles go well with her natural charm. At times she feels insecure about not making enough money as others in town as is afraid others will judge their family because of that. It embarrasses her when people call her a widow after her husband's death, but she hides it for the sake of the children. More than anything, she would love to travel to America to see the new, exotic land for herself. He loves strawberries and the smell of vanilla cookies.

Describe your family: [NOTE: I trimmed this down from the 2 page version.]
I was the only child of my parents, Eliana Winterwood and Bradford Clover. I grew up very poor and desolate. However as I grew older, the Contesa brothers -- John, Matthew, and Robert -- constantly vied for my attention. Matthew died of scarlet fever and his share of the farm would go to whichever brother married first. John and Robert fell over each other to propse t me first. I chose John. I was 16. At 18 I had Alexandra and 7 years later, Samantha. When they were 9 and 2, John died and it left us very poor. I taught them myself and also cooked for a living in the village. Time passed and I received a letter from Robert who wanted to move in until he could recover from the fire that took everything he owned. He bummed at our house for years. Through extenuating circumstances [which will be explained later], I finally kicked him out. That's when I found out that he had murdered my husband all those years ago. I ran to the castle and got a message to the king that there was a murderer in town and Robert was promptly arrested.

What is your idea of a perfect day? Looking after my daughters for a couple hours in the morning, sending them out for a day with their friends while I go into town and take care of my own business, going home to take care of business at home, then getting my children back at the end of the day.

Give the schedule of your average day:
5 am: I wake up to wake up the girls and do chores
6 am: I help Alexandra make breakfast for the family
7 am: We eat breakfast
7:30 am: I clean up the kitchen
8:00 am: I do some more chores and prepare to go out
8:30 am: We go into the village for Samantha’s school and Alexandra’s manner lessons
9:00 am: I go up to the palace to tend after the royal family
11:00 am: I make lunch for the royal family and attendants
12:00 pm: Lunch at the palace
12:30 pm: Clean up from lunch
1:00 pm: Continue tending the royals
3:00 pm: Leave the palace
3:30 pm: Arrive at home and begin making dinner
4:30 pm: Eat dinner
5:00 pm: Clean up from dinner
5:30 pm: Free time to go to town or anywhere for pleasure
7:30 pm: Make sure children are getting ready for bed
8:00 pm: Children are asleep, I relax
8:30 pm: Get ready for bed
9:00 pm: Asleep

Alexandra - created and played by Andrea Beauchamp
    Alexandra Rose Contesa, 16, is a fiery spirit whose spark tends to be smothered out by the rules and expectations that people hold her to because she is a suitor and in order to become a princess, a spunky personality is perhaps not desired by princes all over the kingdom. She is bubbly, caring, and loves being around younger children around the village because they look up to her, and because of this, she at least tries to be a good role model. She has a problem with wanting to please everyone, and by doing so, she usually ends up pleasing everybody but herself. More than anything, she loves to talk and to smile. She wants to make the most out of life whether that means just living a simple life in a provincial village or perhaps living in a kingdom with riches and royalty. Either way, nothing will stop her from reaching her potential.
     Alexandra is five foot three with copper hair, rosy cheeks, and graceful poise though she's awkward in bouncy movements. She loves cooking, ballroom dancing, reading fairytale stories, and eating steel cut oatmeal with berries. People bug her when they are unladylike even though she acts the same at times. Though often talks fast and excitedly, Alexandra is thoughtful and has her quirks and insecurities, such as acting awkward and worrying about being rejected. She's an overachiever and hates the feeling of failure.

Who is your best friend? Elijah (Eli) Mink. He’s 18 years old with straight, medium dark hair, and green eyes. He is loyal, funny, and selfless in the way that he will give up his personal wants for his friends. Everyone in Harravale knows each other, so we grew up knowing each other, but not all that well. When my mom wanted me to go to school, I struggled because I was trying to balance school and the etiquette lessons with Eli, so he offered to just tutor me too. We got along instantly and he understood my point of view on wanting but not completely being crazy about being a suitor, but he does his job while still being a friend to me.

What is your fondest memory? Being with my dad on my 9th birthday. He wanted to do something super special so he took me out horseback riding for the first time. It was amazing and one of the best days of my life. He promised that my next birthday would be even better, but he was killed just four months before my 10th birthday.

Why are you visiting town the day the show opens on? I was going to go to my manner, etiquette, and school lessons with Eli.

Elizabeth - created and played by Charlotte Lindley
     Elizabeth Abigail Smith, 32, is a free spirited mother to two daughters. Growing up, Elizabeth lived with her parents Adam and Maria and older brother Andrew in the village of Oakhill, located just 10 miles south of Harravale. When she was young, she nursed to dreams. One was to live in the castle of the king and queen as a noble. The other was to live in the woods, free and living off the land. Every time she decided on one dream, the other would seem even more appealing. Even once she married at the age of 17, she still reached for both. With her husband Richard, she moved to a farm in Harravale near the castle. She raised her two daughters to be proper and polite while still getting as much fun out of their childhood as possible. Dancing is a big part of her life, though she didn’t learn how to dance until she married. Then she found her natural talent and could hardly stop. For a few years she and Richard helped organize the village dances in the square on special holidays. She was an at home mother, until about a year ago when the family moved into the village just off the square for financial reasons and she began working as a baker.
     Elizabeth, with her blond hair and bright blue eyes, is a happy person who loves to smile. While working, she’s light on her feet as if she could dance in an instant. A devote Christian, she leads hymns at church on Sunday and then sings around the house as she works. Since the family is tight on money, it annoys her when people waste money or food carelessly. She’s easy to talk to and tries to be as honest as possible.

What is your favorite food? Fresh blue berry bread because it reminds me over happy mornings with my mother and brother. When I was young, my mom used to make Andrew and I freshly baked bread for breakfast. She used a special recipe that made it moist while still firm enough to be dragged through porridge. And if our father had been especially unpleasant or mean the day before, she would make it with blue berries; a rare treat my father didn’t approve of. (I also love oranges, for no particular reason. Oranges are very rare and I’ve only had a few in my life, but I love them.)

What is your fondest memory? Spending time with my brother when we were young. We’d go bare horseback riding as fast as we could across the fields to the other side of Oakhill and up the steep hill into the forest (for which the town was named). From there, we could see the castle 10 long miles away. Sometimes I wished I lived there, buried in riches, instead of here in Oakhill. Other times, I wished I lived in the woods, learning to take care of myself. On these outings, Andrew taught me how to set traps to catch animals, read some tracks, use a sling, and fire a small bow and arrow. We were really close and he was the first person I told when Richard asked for my hand. At the time, I wanted to live in the woods more than anything. They were my escape from the reality of responsibility and consequences. Andrew brought me back to reality and reminded me that escape was impossible. I had to live a really life, not a fantastical one. He told me to accept Richard and live a happy life.

What is your biggest insecurity? I still hold on to my two dreams: To live free in the woods and to live in the castle as a noble. I don’t know which I want more… it depends on the day. Part of me is always searching for a way to accomplish one of these dreams, but I’ve never told Richard about them. I don’t want him to think that I am unhappy with our life.

~~~~~~
We worked together to create/describe the village our story takes place:
Harravale [Andrea made the name] is a small, provincial town – located just below the hill from the castle that rules over the surrounding lands -- of about 100 people. There’s a lake nearby, hills all around, paths through the forest and meadows, and a giant and beautiful castle up the way where the king and queen of the country live. Secrets are rare and hard to keep as everyone knows everyone else and everything that they’re doing. People are still kind to one another—unless it is a matter of suitors, dresses, appearances, and jealousy… then there is some dissonance between the teen girls. And because, everyone knows everything already, life tends to be pretty dull. There hasn’t been a near exciting event in town in the past three months at least, which makes the prince’s ball all the grander.
One more thing. Our families switched properties for one year for financial reasons: the Smiths moved to town and the Contesas moved to the country. Elizabeth explains the situations:
     Until last year, I lived on a farm on the outskirts of town with my husband and two daughters. It was a cute little place with a three room house, garden, and barn with the cow, calf, and two horses. We owned ten acres of land, some of which was devoted to growing hay and oats to feed the animals during the winter.
     Last growing season, gophers got into our fields and ate all the seeds we were going to sell to get some money, but now without it, we were coming up short. Richard tried to get some carpentry work in town to earn money, but there was nothing. We started to fall behind on our bills and searched for a way not to lose the house and farm. We finally found someone in town – the Contesas, a shop keeping family in the square -- that wanted to try farm living for a year or so. We set up an agreement of property trade: they would take full ownership of our farm for a year while we took full ownership of the shop space in town. This was a cheaper option for us as the rent in town wasn’t high, there was no farm to tend to, and I could open a small bakery to start earning money again.
     In late February, we packed up and moved into town. The house was large: The front room is outfitted with shelves and a counter to sell things. In the house portion was a kitchen, living room, bedroom, attic where the girls slept, and an extra room for storage.
~~~~~~

Now you've met three little known characters: Lydia, Alexandra, and Elizabeth. You've learned their backstories, visited their village, and got a sneak peak into their thoughts and feelings.

I'd like to point out... a few days ago these characters didn't exist. We'd never heard of them. But we each took on the (seemingly impossible) task of filling out a 60 questions paper about them. What you just read is a portion of the result.

And that's just the three of us! What about the other 47 cast members?

What are their characters like?

You haven't met them yet.

Come see visit us in Harravale. We'll be waiting.
